How can I teach my young children the important of getting involved?

I am very involved in the arts and helping with humanitarian crisis and community work. I would like my two young children to learn the important of compassion and lending a helping hand. What ways can I get my children involved at such young ages so that kindness is something that becomes a big part of their life? Since they are still very young, I want to start off with projects that would be fun yet and instill a sense of pride at their accomplishments of helping. Any ideas?

  1. never to young, I volunteer at church every week, my kids see my husband and I doing this. This year we gave our kids shoe boxes to fill them up for other kids for operation christmas child

  2. collect food for food shelters in the area

do community walks/runs – they have kids races too – and entry fees go to charity

if you know any elderly people in your neighborhood, ask them if you can plant flowers for them outside their house

  3. When I was a kid, my parents took me to church. Every year, during Thanksgiving and Christmas time, they put up a tree with little pieces of paper on the branches. Each piece of paper had a name of a family and how old the kids were. My family would go grocery shopping and gift shopping for them. Then, we would all deliver it together. I made me feel great knowing that I helped out a whole family in need, and it taught me that I should be thankful for the things that I have. You should try something like that. It’s small and simple, but it makes a huge difference in other peoples’ lives, and it give you the most incredibly awesome feeling!
