i am not sure .

i certainly respect both choices.

studies show both diets are healthy

i was raised to enjoy a good steak and i eat them every now and then

i also engage in a big mac once in awhile too lol

i think that when kids get to be a certain age / they will chose or want to try different foods. i do not believe they should be made to feel guilty for going to try a mcdonalds. i believe that God gave the animals to man and that meat is okay to eat. i believe it should be humanly killed. i can respect anyone that does not want to have meat. i have grown up on it and really enjoy it . hard to give up . my conviction lasts until i smell the food and i'm a goner.

why does it matter so much what people eat. why must we explain our choices ? justify what we do. it's just food . i would not worry .

I suppose it's the same as kids who are raised in a meat-eating home become vegetarians. Peer pressure plays a role, if your friends are all vegetarian, or non-vegetarian for example.

Too often.

Parents don't educate their children as well as they should. If they did, they would never choose to abandon such strong values.

I've only known two people that were raised vegetarian, and one started eating meat at 10. She said it was because only one parent was a vegetarian, and the other tempted her with meat. I know six people (including myself) that were raised "normally" and became vegetarians. Regardless, I don't think it's something that should be forced on a kid.

Out of curiosity, why did you start to eat meat?

edit: Ah, the smell. I always found it weird that the person I know (raised veg. and later ate meat) loves the smell of cooked meat, but I didn't become a vegetarian until recently and now the smell really bothers me. To each his/her own.

That is a good question. I suppose it is similar to children raised to eat meat and then decide to go vegetarian. As children grow up they often want to assert their independence and individuality. Sometimes this means choosing something you know your parents would not like(be it eating meat, or choosing not to).

I think a more interesting question would be, how many children that stopped being vegetarian went back when they got older?(after the rebellious stage).

I know of one person who was raised vegetarian, who is still vegetarian.

I know of one other person who made the choice to become a vegetarian when she was 8, her parents (who ate meat) allowed her to and made sure she got all of the supplements she needed, and she is still a veg now. (We're both 22 now.)

I think this applies to most things... such as children raised by extremely strict, religious parents sometimes lash out and become the complete opposite at the first chance, and some follow the religion they were raised on through their entire life.

Depends upon the child, and the parent.

I am a twenty plus year Lacto-ovo- Vegetarian. My wife and three children are all Vegetarians. No turning back in our family.

The vegetarian lifestyle is absolutely the best without a doubt. We are going to pass it on to the next generation within our family tree.

Everyone I know who was raised vegetarian has had meat at some point in their lives.

Most of them will at least sneak a taste at about 10...

One of my veg friends has 5 kids, 2 became meat eaters from age 10, 1 remained veg till 16 (when he decided to go to cooking school, I'm not sure if he remained veg), the remaining 2 are under 10 and too young really to decide for themselves.
