  1. Well, as far as I know Nelson Mandela didn’t go to jail willingly, he was arrested and charged as an enemy of the state because of his anti-apartheid sentiments and his involvement with the African National Congress (which was a banned political party at that stage).

    After his trial he was banished off to Robben Island and served his time there as a political prisoner.

    So I don’t think he went to jail to consciously try and accomplish something. He was merely living out his beliefs even if that went against the country’s laws at the time. When he was imprisoned, he inspired and motivated those around him as well as the various people outside who believed in the cause.

    He was thus an inspirational leader in the apartheid struggle.
